Exactly a week ago, this site reported the announcement of the 2016–17 season of the San Francisco Conservatory (SFCM). However, apart from bringing attention to a few key highlights, the focus of the article was the Kick-Off Weekend series of diverse performances, which will take place during the middle of next month. However, there will be several other concerts of interest, all of which involve different members of the SFCM faculty. Four of these will be programs presented under the rubric of the Faculty Artist Series, each of which involves the leadership of one of the faculty members and often involves the participation of colleagues. In chronological order the four Faculty Artist Series concerts in September will be as follows:
Sunday, September 11, 2 p.m., Concert Hall: Pianist Paul Hersh will perform Johann Sebastian Bach’s BWV 988 set of (“Goldberg”) variations on an Aria theme (which happens to have the rhythm of a saraband). Hersh often precedes his performances by providing his audience with informative explanatory background, and this recital will be no exception. The first half of the program will be devoted to a lecture about BWV 988 that should throw new lights on the listening experience for both those familiar with the music and those encountering it for the first time.
Monday, September 12, 7:30 p.m., Concert Hall: Guitarist Richard Savino will give a solo recital and has not yet announced his program.
Monday, September 19, 7:30 p.m., Recital Hall: Cellist Jean-Michel Fonteneau has prepared a diverse recital to which he has invited four of his colleagues. He will begin with a performance of three solo pieces composed by Gregor Piatigorsky. Accompanied by pianist Xin Zhao, he will perform two major sonatas composed during the twentieth century, the third of Paul Hindemith’s Opus 25 sonatas and Dmitri Shostakovich’s Opus 40 sonata in D minor. In addition he will join violinists Bettina Mussumeli and Alisa Rose and violist Jodi Levitz in a performance of Quncy Porter’s third string quartet.
Sunday, September 25, 2 p.m., Concert Hall: Violinist We He will perform Antonín Dvořák’s Opus 87 piano quartet in E-flat major with violist Jay Liu, cellist Amos Wang, and pianist Yoshikazu Nagai; he has not yet announced the remainder of his program.
All four of these concerts will be free. However, the recital on September 19 will require advance registration. This may be achieved by filling out an online Web form. Reservations may also be made by calling the Box Office at 415-503-6275.
In addition Nicole Paiement will conduct the first concert of the season by the New Music Ensemble. The title of the program is Intentions. Full details have not yet been announced, but the focus will be on the composers Hans Werner Henze and Giya Kancheli. This performance will take place in the Concert Hall on Wednesday, September 21, beginning at 8 p.m. There will be no charge for admission.
