This is shaping up to be a relatively quiet week. However, as was reported last month, the San Francisco Composers Chamber Orchestra will be launching its 2016–2017 season on Saturday with a program entitled In Uncertain Times, whose title is likely to resonate with most readers regardless of the content. Friday and Saturday are also the dates of the previously announced “festlet” presented in the sfSoundSalonSeries at the Center for New Music celebrating the 50th birthday of sfSoundGroup saxophonist, conductor, and founding member John Ingle. Among the new items, this will be another “double header” week for Outsound Presents; and Gray Area Art and Technology will be offering a marathon that will not be for the faint of heart. Specifics, in chronological order, are as follows:
Thursday, October 13, 8 p.m., Luggage Store Gallery: This week’s installment in Outsound Presents’ Luggage Store Creative Music Series will offer a generous share of electronics in two sets of free improvisation. The first set has a title, “Inter-dimensional Incursion;” and it is based on Mika Pontecorvo’s experiments in generative design architecture, which he conducted between 1992 and 2001. Pontecorvo will be performing on both guitar and electronics. Electronics will also be provided by Amanda Chaudhary and Mark Pino, who will also be playing percussion and waterphone. Both Jaroba and Kersti Abrams will be playing saxophones, and Abrams will also play maqrunah (a North African wind instrument) and the African mbira thumb piano. Bass will be provided by Elijah Pontecorvo. The group describe’s its stile as “Ambient Post-industrial Folk.” The second set will be taken by the Ear Spray trio with Carlos Jennings on electronics, Pino again on percussion, and Ann O’Rourke working with both processed vocals and processed video samples. The Luggage Store Gallery is located at 1007 Market Street, across the street from where Golden Gate Avenue meets Taylor Street (which happens to be the site of the Golden Gate Theatre). As usual, admission will be on a sliding scale between $6 and $15.
Friday, October 14, 9 p.m., Gray Area Art and Technology: This will be a marathon five-hour night of “manic forward momentum.” The featured artist will be Matthew Dear performing as Audion. Additional sets will be provided by local DJs Mozhgan, Jacob Sperber (performing as Jackie House), and Matt Hubert. All tickets will be $15 and are being sold in advance online through an Eventbrite event page. The Gray Area Art and Technology Theater is located in the Mission at 2665 Mission Street.
Sunday, October 16, 7:30 p.m., The Musicians Union Hall: The second offering from Outsound Presents will be the next SIMM (Static Illusion Methodical Madness) Series concert. This will be a two-set program with both sets featuring composer Bill Noertker, who will also be playing bass in both sets. The first set will be a duo with David Beck on baritone saxophone and will also include Beck’s compositions. Beck and Noertker play as a duo under the name The Melanchoholics. For the second set Noertker will shift over to electric bass for a duo performance with Mark Oi on electric guitar. This set will also include compositions by Oi, as well as works by Noertker. The Musicians Union Hall is located at 116 9th Street, near the corner of Mission Street. Admission is on a sliding scale between $10 and $15.
