A Second Chance to Listen to the Vinifera Trio

Those who follow the Concerts at 405 Shrader Web site (which tends to be the only way to find out about their Friday evening Aperitif Concerts) may have been disappointed by the fact that the November 18 performance by the Vinifera Trio is already sold out and totally full. This group is the partnership of pianist Ian Scarfe with violinist Rachel Patrick and Matthew Boyles playing both clarinet and bass clarinet. The program was planned to feature Boyles’ arrangement of George Gershwin’s “An American in Paris,” coupled with two “flirtations” with the jazz style by European composers. The first of these is the suite of five selections from L’histoire du soldat (the soldier’s tale) that Igor Stravinsky extracted and arranged himself for clarinet, violin, and piano, which includes the dance episode involving a tango, a waltz, and ragtime. The second is Maurice Ravel’s only sonata for violin and piano, whose second movement was marked as “Blues.”

Because of the high demand for this program, 405 Shrader has agreed to host a second performance the following evening, Saturday, November 19. Like the first concert, it will begin at 7 p.m. However, the only way to guarantee a seat will be to arrange for a reservation through electronic mail. Admission is solely by donation with a recommended amount of $20 per person. As might be guessed, 405 Shrader is the address of the venue, located at the corner of Oak Street near the Panhandle.
