Once again the After Dark Thursday Nights offerings at the Exploratorium will present a venture into new music. Next week the Del Sol String Quartet will give the world premiere of “Attention,” a new hybrid work for string quartet with video, created by Pamela Z. Z conceived this piece as an exploration of the ways in which attention and focus are challenged in today’s culture. (In the spirit of her work, I have to wonder how many readers made it as far as this sentence!) Her score requires that the four members of the quartet play their instruments, sing, speak, move, and interact with not only each other but also auxiliary electronic devices. The result will be a feedback loop that creates a mesh of interlocking sonic events and projected visuals. The Del Sol musicians will then complement Z’s piece with three additional compositions that resonate with the themes and technological adaptations she has explored. The entire performance will be followed by a moderated conversation and Q&A with composer and performers.
This program is part of the Cinema Arts series of events held in conjunction with the “adults only” offerings at the Exploratorium on Thursday evenings. This particular concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. this coming Thursday, November 10. The Exploratorium is located at Pier 15 on the Embarcadero, across from the intersection with Green Street. Tickets are $15 for general admission and $10 for members. Exploratorium Lab Members are admitted free of charge. Admission is only for those age 18 or over. Tickets may be purchased in advance from a special Web page for Thursday Nights admission on the Exploratorium Web site, which has a calendar for selecting the specific date. Those interested in visiting the Tactile Dome will be required to pay an additional $10 at the door. The performance itself will take place in the Kanbar Forum, where seating is relatively limited and will be made available on a first-come-first-served basis.
